4-Step Business Continuity Plan

Every business in Carrollton, TX, should have a business continuity plan (BCP) in place. Also known as an emergency response plan, this document details what to do in case of an emergency or disaster where the business cannot run in a normal capacity. Events such as cyberattacks or catastrophic weather can derail a business if precautions aren’t taken beforehand to mitigate the financial impact.


1. Identify Risks


You should identify all of the business operations that are sensitive or critical. You should determine the key operations and answer these questions:

• What if all digital communication were inaccessible due to a cyberattack?
• How many and which staff members are critical for minimum daily functions?
• Which outside vendors are necessary for continued operation?


2. Develop Safeguards


Once you have identified the critical components of the business, you should develop plans to implement in case these functions cease. Use these questions as a guide:

• Can some of your employees work remotely?
• Is there an alternate site that can be used to resume operations?
• Do you have, or can you create, partnerships with some other businesses to provide resources in case of an emergency?


3. Test Procedures


Emergency services, such as police and fire, occasionally set up mock disasters to test their response teams. Businesses can do the same type of full-scale drill to test the viability of the business continuity plan procedures. If that seems excessive, simply walking through the procedures with the teams can also work. Knowing that a plan is in place and knowing the step-by-step processes may be all that is needed.


4. Review Processes


Once all of the procedures are in place, periodically review them to make sure that they are still relevant. If any aspect of the business has changed, the BCP should change also. New employees should be versed on important aspects of the emergency response plan.

The business continuity plan does not have to be long and complicated, but it should have pertinent information to help your business resume operations during or after a disaster or emergency. Having this plan in place, testing it, and periodically reviewing it for relevance can make a difference between success and failure during times of crisis.
