I was told to just spray bleach on mold.

Bleaching mold is a common DIY remedy for mold removal, but it doesn’t always work. Mold uses a root system called hyphae to anchor to wood, paper, and any other porous materials. Bleaching may clean the surface mold, but the hyphae left behind will cause mold to grow as soon as the area is wet once again.
