A disaster like this may seem like the end of the world but to our SERVPRO team it’s just an average day. This is our specialty. Our job is to provide state-of-the-art service to our customers that are in need of water damage restoration experts.

The first 24 hours following a water loss are the most important in preventing secondary or permanent damage. That is why it is imperative to call SERVPRO as soon as possible, so our team can start extracting the water.

Here is what you can expect when our highly trained technicians arrive at your home or business.

INSPECTION

Within an hour of receiving the loss notification, our SERVPRO of Carrollton restoration professionals will be on-site to help ensure your water damage is handled in accordance with the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) Standards.

Our team will inspect the affected areas to determine the extent of the water damage. We will review the inspection with you, answering any questions you may have before beginning the work.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

Our SERVPRO of Carrollton professionals take the necessary steps to help protect your home or business, as well as personal property and other contents from further damage by extracting the excess water and preparing the affected area for drying.

Once the area is prepared for drying, our technicians will then place our state-of-the-art drying equipment strategically in the area. Our team will explain the needed emergency services to you step-by-step and can assist you with filing an insurance claim, should you choose to file a claim. We always keep a great working relationship with our local Insurance Adjusters and Claims Agents.

MONITOR

To help ensure the structure and contents of your home or business are dried to the appropriate IICRC Standards, a SERVPRO of Carrollton professional will monitor and document the drying process. These updates will be consistently communicated with you and when applicable, to your Insurance Adjuster or Claims Agent. Continuous monitoring allows our trained technicians to better understand how the property is drying, and the equipment can then be adjusted to dry the area quickly and more cost effectively. The length of drying does depend on the severity of the loss.

Let us give you 5 Reasons...

24-Hour Emergency Service

Unfortunately, disaster can strike at any time, and when it comes to water damage after a storm, time is of the essence. Every second a structure is exposed to water increases the chances of mold growth.  Our SERVPRO of Carrollton / Far North Dallas team is on-call 24-7, including holidays, to help after a storm. The professionals at SERVPRO are available 24-hours a day and work to provide storm restoration services for both residential properties and commercial buildings. They respond to calls quickly to minimize damage and, in turn, the costs of cleanup and restoration.

Certification and Experience

It is very important to have experienced professionals when dealing with water or fire damage. Look for a company with certifications backed up by real-world experience. The technicians at SERVPRO are all IICRC certified. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets high-quality standards for restoration companies. Employees at SERVPRO are constantly learning new techniques through e-Classes and certification training.

Advanced Technology

Storm damage restoration is a complex process and requires advanced technology. Choosing a restoration company with the proper tools is crucial to minimizing damage. SERVPRO only uses the best technology and equipment, including water removal machines, moisture exposing tools, and deodorization materials. They have access to equipment housed in over 1,700 franchises and even have designated disaster recovery teams.

Locally Owned and Operated

Locally owned companies are more invested in ensuring communities bounce back after major storms. Their clients aren’t just clients—they’re neighbors, friends, and family. SERVPRO is a nationwide franchise, but each franchise is locally owned. This combination gives home and business owners the best of both worlds: the customer care and localized knowledge that comes with a local company and a large corporation's resources.

Familiar with Insurance Requirements

Storm damage restoration can be stressful. However, dealing with insurance providers afterward can be even worse. The best storm restoration companies are familiar with all major insurance providers and provide assistance with the claims process.

We recognize that each home and situation is unique, requiring a tailored approach to address specific needs and challenges. Our procedure is designed to provide a seamless restoration experience, minimizing the impact on homeowners and helping them regain a sense of normalcy.

Comprehensive damage assessment

In the aftermath of a natural disaster, the first step taken by SERVPRO of Carrollton is a comprehensive damage assessment. Our experienced team of experts meticulously examines every corner of the affected property to gain a thorough understanding of the extent of the devastation. We leave no stone unturned, inspecting both visible and hidden areas to ensure a comprehensive evaluation.

During the damage assessment, our professionals evaluate various aspects of the property, including its structural integrity, electrical systems, plumbing, and HVAC units. We also assess the impact of water, fire, wind, or any other specific type of damage caused by the natural disaster. Our meticulous approach enables us to uncover even the most subtle signs of damage, ensuring no underlying issues are overlooked.

By conducting a comprehensive damage assessment, we gain valuable insights into the property's restoration needs. This assessment forms the foundation for developing a tailored restoration plan that addresses the specific requirements of each home. It allows us to allocate resources effectively, determine the scope of work, and provide homeowners with a clear understanding of the restoration process ahead.

Throughout the damage assessment, our team utilizes advanced tools and technologies to aid in detecting and documenting damage. We employ thermal imaging cameras, moisture meters, and other specialized equipment to identify hidden areas of water intrusion, mold growth, or structural weaknesses. This meticulous approach enables us to create a precise and detailed assessment report, providing homeowners with a comprehensive understanding of the damage and the steps required for restoration.

At SERVPRO of Carrollton, we recognize that a thorough damage assessment is the first step in restoration. It allows us to develop a customized restoration plan that caters to the unique needs of each home. By delving deep into the assessment, we ensure that no damage goes unnoticed, giving homeowners the confidence and assurance that their property will be restored to its pre-disaster condition.

Initial assessment and safety measures - Ensuring a solid foundation for flood restoration

When a flood strikes, SERVPRO of Carrollton springs into action with a meticulous initial assessment and a firm focus on safety. Our experienced team of technicians thoroughly evaluates the affected property to determine the extent of the flood damage and identify any potential safety hazards. This critical first step lays the groundwork for an effective and efficient flood restoration process.

Upon arrival at the property, our trained professionals prioritize the safety of all occupants and our restoration team. We assess the immediate surroundings, identifying any visible risks or hazards such as structural instability, electrical damage, or standing water. Our technicians promptly implement safety measures, securing the area and marking off hazardous zones to prevent accidents or injuries during the restoration process.

The comprehensive assessment encompasses a detailed examination of the property, both internally and externally. Our team carefully inspects the affected areas, evaluating the level of water intrusion, assessing potential damage to the structure, and identifying areas of concern. This meticulous assessment ensures that no aspect of the flood damage goes unnoticed, allowing us to develop a tailored restoration plan that addresses the specific needs of the property.

To accurately assess the extent of the flood damage, we utilize advanced tools and technologies. Moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and other specialized equipment aid in detecting hidden moisture pockets and potential structural weaknesses. This attention to detail enables us to create a comprehensive assessment report, providing homeowners with a clear understanding of the damage and the steps required for restoration.

Water extraction and drying

When it comes to flood restoration, one of the most critical steps is the swift and efficient water extraction and subsequent drying of the affected property. Upon completing the initial assessment, our highly skilled technicians promptly initiate the water extraction phase. We deploy powerful pumps and extraction units specifically designed for efficient water removal. Our team strategically works to extract standing water from the property, ensuring that no moisture is left behind. By swiftly removing the water, we prevent additional damage, such as structural weakening, mold growth, and further deterioration of materials.

Once the water extraction phase is complete, we focus on thoroughly drying the affected areas. Our team utilizes professional-grade dehumidifiers and high-velocity air movers to create an optimal drying environment. These specialized equipment work in tandem to remove excess moisture from the air and materials, accelerating the evaporation process. We carefully position the equipment to target specific areas, ensuring that every nook and cranny receives adequate airflow for efficient drying.

Our technicians monitor moisture levels throughout the drying process using advanced moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras. This allows us to accurately assess the progress and make necessary adjustments to the drying equipment. We remain vigilant in achieving optimal dryness, continually measuring moisture content until we restore the property to pre-flood conditions.

In cases where materials have absorbed significant moisture, such as carpets, upholstery, or drywall, our team employs specialized techniques to enhance drying. We may remove and properly dispose of irreparable materials to prevent mold growth or other potential health hazards. We prioritize salvaging and restoring as much as possible, utilizing industry-approved techniques to mitigate water damage and preserve the integrity of the property.

Thorough cleaning and sanitization

In the aftermath of a flood, thorough cleaning and sanitization play a vital role in restoring the affected property to a safe and livable condition. At SERVPRO of Carrollton, we prioritize meticulously cleaning and sanitization of all surfaces and materials, ensuring that homeowners can return to a clean and healthy environment.

Floodwaters often bring in a multitude of contaminants, including bacteria, pathogens, and other harmful substances. Our team understands the potential health risks associated with these contaminants and takes proactive measures to eliminate them. We utilize professional-grade disinfectants and cleaning solutions specifically formulated to neutralize and eliminate these hazards.

Our technicians begin by removing any debris, mud, or silt left behind by the floodwaters. This initial cleanup phase involves carefully removing and disposing of all visible dirt and contaminants. We pay close attention to hard-to-reach areas and hidden spaces, leaving no corner untouched. Our team's meticulous approach ensures that even the most concealed surfaces are thoroughly cleaned.

Once the visible debris is cleared, we proceed with the comprehensive cleaning and sanitization of affected surfaces. Our skilled technicians employ a combination of manual cleaning techniques and advanced equipment to ensure a deep and thorough clean. We scrub, wipe, and disinfect all surfaces, including walls, floors, furniture, and fixtures, paying attention to detail to remove any traces of contamination.

In instances where porous materials, such as carpets or upholstered furniture, have been affected by the flood, we implement specialized cleaning methods. Our team utilizes professional-grade extraction equipment and techniques to remove moisture, dirt, and potential contaminants from these materials. We strive to salvage and restore as much as possible while ensuring the cleaned items are free from harmful substances.

Air quality is another crucial aspect we address during the cleaning and sanitization process. We employ advanced air filtration systems to capture airborne particles and improve indoor air quality. This step helps remove odors, allergens, and residual contaminants, creating a healthier living environment for homeowners.

At SERVPRO of Carrollton, our commitment to thorough cleaning and sanitization extends beyond visible surfaces. We understand the importance of addressing even the smallest details. Our team meticulously cleans hard-to-reach areas, such as vents, ducts, and crawl spaces, to ensure that every inch of the property is restored to its cleanest and safest state.

By prioritizing thorough cleaning and sanitization, we restore the affected property to a pristine condition – free from contaminants and potential health hazards. Garage water damage: How to mitigate disaster and the need for water removal services

2/17/2023 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Carrollton offers helpful tips for mitigating a water damage disaster in the garage.

SERVPRO® of Carrollton provides water removal and cleanup when a water damage disaster occurs in the garage. Technicians, certified by the IICRC, utilize powerful wet/dry vacuums to remove the water and heavy-duty dehumidifiers to remove excess moisture. The SERVPRO team offers these tips to mitigate a water damage disaster in the garage.

The garage never gets a break from the risk of water damage. Winter brings cold, wet spells that can last for days. Occasionally, thunderstorms rumble through North Texas dumping inches of rain on Carrollton and the surrounding communities. Spring brings an onslaught of moisture, which finally gives way to the much drier summer months. The solution is consistently applying water damage mitigating strategy for the garage. Procrastination can lead to thousands of dollars in water damage, foundation damage, and mold infestation.

The tips below can help mitigate flooding in the garage when storms bring the conditions necessary for flooding and water damage.

#1. Install weather stripping under the garage door

This preventive measure is very simple and should be the first step in executing a flood damage prevention strategy. Weatherstripping is the first line of defense against flooding in the garage. Properly installed weatherstripping can keep most water from entering the garage. However, degraded weatherstripping can allow large amounts of water to enter the garage, causing widespread damage to baseboards, structural timber, the garage floor, and whatever contents are stored in the garage. Moisture in the garage can cause mold in the bonus room above the garage.

Install best quality replacement weatherstripping designed for the specific door. The lower-quality adhesive weatherstripping solutions are inferior and will lead to problems not too far into the future.

#2. Install sandbags or flood barriers across the garage entrance

When meteorologists call for a stall low-pressure system with lots of rain or a severe band of heavy thunderstorms that can cause flooding, take immediate action to put down sandbags. Homes that are not in flood plains may still be at risk of flooding. A stalled thunderstorm can cause havoc in a cul de sac. Clogged storm drains will not be able to evacuate enough water to prevent flooding. Or, the downpour may be so heavy the drainage capacity is overwhelmed, resulting in only several homes being flooded. If localized micro-flooding has occurred in the past, be assured history will repeat itself. Sandbags and flood barriers can keep out most, if not all, of the water, preventing the garage and home from being flooded.

#3. Install one or more flood vents

A flood vent does not prevent flooding, but the vents do prevent the water from backing up in the garage and flooding the living space inside the home. When water floods the garage, it evacuates through the vents before becoming deep enough to flood into the house. The garage may sustain some damage, but the damage will be limited to only an inch or so at the most.

#4. Install multiple drainage solutions to direct the water away from the home and garage

The neighborhood storm drain system should be able to handle most heavy downpours. If the storm drain system cannot control the rainfall, steps can be taken to safeguard the home and garage. First, assess the slope around the house. If the ground slopes toward the home, flooding is inevitable. Some adjustments can be immediately implemented. The grade around the home can be improved to direct water away from the foundation and garage. Another solution is a French drain along the drive or in front of the garage. The system should effectively capture and divert water away from the garage and foundation.

Drainage issues can result in extensive water damage in a home or business. When dealing with water flow, elevation, topography, slope, grade, and municipal water management codes, the homeowner may need to bring in professionals with the training and experience to identify and implement a solution.

When adjusting slope and drainage, be aware that every action has a consequence. Excess water runoff caused by changing the topography or drainage of the yard could cause a flood damage disaster in one or more neighbor’s yards, and the offending party could be held liable for damages. Schedule a consultation with a certified landscape architect to inspect and assess the situation. A few simple changes in berms, swales, trenches, and drains can save tens of thousands of dollars in flood damage to the homes and businesses of neighbors.

Causes of Mold Growth on Walls and Solutions for Remediation

7/22/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Carrollton explains three causes of mold growth on walls in the home and what the homeowner can do about it.

The team of certified, experienced, and dedicated professionals at SERVPRO of Carrollton is committed to providing excellent cleanup and restoration services, including mold removal. Mold remediation is important since many instances of property damage involve excessive water and moisture damage. Mold thrives in dark, warm, moist environments where organic matter is available for food. Wood, paper, and natural fibers are ideal food sources for mold, and mold spores can be found growing on drywall, sheetrock, paneling, cabinets, baseboards, ceilings, and walls.

Mold can damage any surface where spores gain a foothold.  Wall studs, support beams, flooring substrate, cabinets, and furniture can suffer from mold damage. Mold causes wood rot, fabric discoloration, and superficial damage to the finish on furniture, doors, and cabinets. Mold growth on ceilings and walls is inevitable because the majority of the surface area in a home involves the walls and ceilings.

What Causes Mold to Grow on Walls?

Mold is everywhere in nature, including in Richardson, TX, homes. If food, water, and warmth are present, so is mold. Reduce the amount of sunlight and minimize or restrict ventilation, and mold will explode in these warm, moist, food-rich areas. The complete removal of mold is impossible. The goal is to control the mold. Control the temperature, moisture, food sources, light, and airflow to minimize mold growth in any structure but especially in the home, which is moisture-laden and rich in food. By the time brown, black, green, and bronze patches appear on the ceiling and walls, the mold growth is out of control.

The proliferation of mold in the home should stir the homeowner to take immediate action to identify the causes of mold growth. Most homeowners understand the close relationship between mold and moisture. On the other hand, few homeowners realize that there are many sources of moisture in a typical home. The good news is that many of these sources can be easily mitigated or prevented.

High Household Humidity

The main cause of mold growth on walls and ceilings in the home is humidity. The humidity can be due to wet, humid weather patterns. A slow-moving tropical depression can stall over a region as the Dallas/Fort Worth area for days pumping in rain and moisture. Bathrooms with tubs and showers are sources of internal humidity. Meal preparation that involves boiling, frying, and sauteing produces large amounts of moisture in the main living areas of the home. Look for mold on walls, ceilings, cabinets, appliances, and the stove hood.

Solutions:

One way to remedy high household humidity is to purchase one or more room dehumidifiers and use them when humidity levels are high. The optimal humidity range in a home is between 30% and 50%. Better quality room dehumidifiers are several hundred dollars from the big box home improvement stores. These units are very effective at keeping humidity levels within safe, comfortable ranges.

When cooking, run the exhaust fan to remove moisture produced by items boiling, frying, or sauteing on the stovetop. When preparing a shrimp boil or similar dish, operate the dehumidifier in tandem with the exhaust fan.

Bathroom moisture can be removed or reduced by turning on the ceiling exhaust fan and opening windows to let fresh, dry air into the room.

Inspect the clothes dryer to ensure the exhaust hose is snugly attached so that none of the warm, moist air is escaping into the home. On laundry day, the washer and dryer can run continuously for hours. Make sure the moisture makes its way outside. Check behind the washer and dryer for mold growth on the walls.

Condensation

The perimeter walls of a home can be cooler than the interior walls when external temperatures are much cooler than the inside of the house. As a result of this temperature variation, condensation may form on the perimeter walls. If the condensation is allowed to continue to occur, it will make the walls a breeding ground for mold.

Solutions:

Inspect the perimeter walls when the outside weather would be cold enough to produce condensation on the walls. Clean the walls during the winter months when condensation is at its peak. Upgrades to the insulation may eliminate the temperature variations that cause the condensation.

Water Leaks

A leak from a drain pipe, toilet, tub, shower, or water supply line provides a consistent supply of water that can damage framing, ceilings, and walls. The walls will show signs of warping, bubbling or peeling paint, and eventually brown, green, black, or bronze splotches. Streaks, stains, and pungent smells send a clear message that mold is a problem.

Solutions:

Regularly inspect walls for water leaks. The problem could stem from any of the sources mentioned above or from a leak in the roof. Upon discovering a water leak, have it immediately repaired. A roof leak may require the services of a professional roofing contractor. Some plumbing leaks may be difficult to trace and repair, and a reputable, competent plumber may have to be called in to resolve the issues.

What to Do in the Event of a Mold Infestation

The best, safest, and quickest course of action in the event of a mold problem is to hire a certified, reputable professional to provide mold remediation services. SERVPRO of Carrollton is able to clean up and repair any water damage associated with the mold. Certified technicians using the latest equipment, advanced moisture detecting technology, industry-standard cleaning techniques, and EPA-approved products remediate the mold. How the SERVPRO Team Helps Disaster Victims Recover from the Storm Damage of Hurricane Season

5/18/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Carrollton explains how communities devastated by a hurricane can benefit from disaster recovery services.

SERVPRO of Carrollton provides disaster response and damage restoration services that help communities recover from hurricane damage. A prime example of SERVPRO’s disaster response was on display in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Hurricane Harvey and SERVPRO’s Disaster Response

On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey slammed into the coast of Texas, causing $125 billion in property damage and disrupting the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents in the Houston and greater South Texas area. The slow-moving giant brought devastating flooding to the area. Two feet of rain fell in the first 24 hours after the storm made landfall. A measuring site near Jack Brooks Regional Airport recorded 64.58 inches of rainfall, breaking the total rainfall record for a single storm in the continental US. The storm’s footprint covered an estimated 28,949 square miles. The lumbering storm-damaged 204,000 homes, three-fourths of which were outside of the 100-year flood plain. Thirteen million people were impacted by the hurricane.

The Category 4 hurricane had sustained winds of 130 mph and posted wind gusts of up to 140 mph. Hurricane Harvey is the second costliest natural disaster in US history, surpassed only by Hurricane Katrina ($161 billion), which hit the Gulf Coast from August 23 through August 31, 2005.

FEMA referred to the outpouring of aid as a “Historic Disaster Response.” According to FEMA, “The Coast Guard deployed 2,060 personnel, 50 aircraft, 75 boats, and 29 cutters, rescuing 11,022 people and 1,384 pets. FEMA assigned 28 Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams from across the nation to deploy to Texas to assist state and local agencies with the lifesaving mission.”

An estimated 43,000 people needed food and shelter after the storm. Dallas set up a mega-shelter that could accommodate 5,000 people.

SERVPRO launched a massive response to deliver storm and flood damage cleanup and restoration services to the disaster-stricken region. A corporate press release described the restoration franchise’s large-scale response to Hurricane Harvey, stating, “SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Team has been activated to help residents and business owners in storm-damaged areas on the Texas coast, throughout the Houston area, and in western Louisiana. SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Teams will be assisting the 121 local Franchises already located in the affected areas. SERVPRO has more than 1,000 crews ready to mobilize, with nearly 300 crews already on the ground ready to assist home and business owners.”

SERVPRO of Carrollton and the larger family of SERVPRO professionals are able to come together to provide a well-coordinated response in the event of a catastrophic storm or other major disasters.

The SERVPRO Disaster Recovery Team is prepared to meet the challenges of any size or type of disaster, including a hurricane, tornado, large-scale flooding, or the unusual frigid blast in February of 2021. What does a Thermal Camera do?

4/21/2022 (Permalink)

A thermal imaging camera is a specialized piece of equipment that restoration professionals use to detect heat. The thermal camera can create images of any form of detectable infrared radiation by capturing different heat levels to help determine the temperature of an object in it.

Thermal imagery is a great way to analyze your home’s heat loss and leaks. First, however, you need to know how to interpret the images. For example, infrared cameras detect thermal energy escaping due to missing insulation, cracks around windows and doors, and electrical hotspots.

However, thermal imaging can also detect particular cold areas and can help to identify water leaks and cold spots in homes.

Moisture seepage and water leaks are subtle and easy to miss in a building until it is too late. For example, small water drips from the ceiling or pools of water on floors mean a significant problem in the plumbing system or roof. Therefore, when interpreting a thermal image, it is essential to understand it doesn’t offer X-ray vision.

Is Blue Always “Wet” on Thermal Imaging?

There are many sources of moisture in buildings, including humidity (in all seasons), condensation, leaking pipes, rain and snow, and even human and animal breath. Usually, low humidity is fine, but leaks or a lot of condensation can cause serious problems. Unfortunately, a thermal imaging camera cannot “see” moisture in walls. Still, it can detect subtle temperature differences and patterns that indicate the presence of water.

Different colors are used to interpret an object’s temperature or amount of heat. The color range is red, orange, black, yellow, and purple. In this case, bright colors such as red, yellow, and orange indicate high temperatures, and purple, dark blue, and black indicate low temperatures.

Red, yellow, and orange: Indicates warm to high temperatures.

Dark blue, black, and purple: Represents cool to freezing temperatures.

Leaks or moisture almost always appear cooler and bluer then the surrounding material. Therefore, it becomes easier to make informed decisions when you understand how to read and interpret the thermal cameras.

Using thermal imaging cameras makes it easier to spot potential moisture problems. This can help prevent the need for destructive testing methods to check for leaks.

Humidity Patterns in Houses

Humidity in buildings often spreads in a recognizable pattern depending on the location of the water.

On walls: Downward triangular patterns are formed when water spreads downwards.

Ceilings: Any shapeless, unstructured shape with regions of wet, damp, and wet matter that spread outward with varying temperatures.

Flooding: The overflowing water runs along the wall into the insulation and over the wall studs.

Hot water pipes: Leaks from hot water pipes appear as warm areas.

The Importance of Hiring Professionals to Clean Up and Restore Water Damage in School Athletic Facilities

3/11/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Carrollton highlights the importance of having a highly trained, professional water damage cleanup company to remediate a water-damaged gym at a school.

SERVPRO of Carrollton is the water damage mold cleanup specialist in Richardson, TX, and surrounding areas that is able to handle a water intrusion involving a wooden gym court. A typical gym may have several courts with as many as twenty to forty thousand square feet under the roof. When the scope of a disaster is enormous and cleanup and restoration services are needed in a hurry, trust the professionals at SERVPRO of Carrollton for water damage, mold removal, and fire and smoke damage cleanup and restoration.

A wooden gym floor in pristine condition is both an athletic venue and a beautiful work of art. A water intrusion, if not immediately addressed by a skilled team of water damage cleanup specialists, can negatively impact the safety and beauty of a wood court. The polished surface can lose its luster and grip. The flat, smooth floor may develop ridges and peaks that compromise the safety of the venue. The unevenness can cause trip-and-fall injuries. In the heat of competition, athletes may receive abrasions and bruises when making contact with the ridges and peaks in the uneven, water-damaged flooring. The removal of bulk water and remaining moisture is crucial to preserve the integrity of the finish and to prevent the individual wooden slats from  warping.

Common Causes of Water Damage on a Wooden Gym Floor

A wooden basketball or volleyball court is composed of thousands of individual pieces of interlocking wooden slats. Each seam is a potential water intrusion leak point. Wet mopping introduces an excessive amount of water that can seep through cracks and gaps, collecting on the undersides of the flooring where it can cause water damage, including warping, wood rot, and mold. Not only is surface water a danger to a wooden gym floor, but sustained levels of high humidity can affect the wooden structure.

Other causes of water intrusion include:

  • Burst water pipes
  • Roof leaks around vents, fans, and skylights
  • Severe weather that overwhelms the roof’s drainage system
  • Localized surface flooding
  • Sump pump failure
  • Sewage backups
  • Storm damage to the roof

What Are the Effects of Water Damage?

Excessive and prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to cupping and crowning as the wood absorbs the water and expands and contracts. The wood will not return to its original size.

Mold growth often appears when a water intrusion occurs on a hardwood gym floor. Wood, an organic material, is a favorite of mold, which can weaken the structural integrity of a wood floor if the mold infestation is not immediately remediated.

What Should Be the Initial Response to Water Damage?

Time is the enemy when a water intrusion occurs on a wooden court. The longer the wood absorbs the moisture or water, the greater the risk that the floor may not be salvageable. However, a minor spill that is immediately dried with a mop or towels or suctioned up with a shop vac poses little threat to the floor.

When a water intrusion is ignored or goes unnoticed, moisture is absorbed by the wood, seeps through the seams, and accumulates under the flooring. The result can be a very costly large-scale water damage disaster.

The first step is to stop the water intrusion at the source. Bulk water should be immediately removed. What appears to be a small amount of water in shallow puddles around the gym floor can, in reality, be hundreds of gallons of water. Efforts to remove the water with a shop vacuum could take many hours, and the delay in removing the water could ruin the floor. A professional water damage restoration company with truck-mounted pumps and a vacuum system can swiftly remove the bulk water, minimizing or preventing any damage to the floor. The remaining moisture can be removed with special equipment and applied structural drying techniques. Failure to deal with the water intrusion as prescribed in a floor warranty may invalidate the agreement. Unnecessary delays or neglect to resolve a water intrusion or moisture issue could affect insurance claim payouts.

The size, construction materials, and structural complexity of a wood gym floor require the knowledge, experience, skill, and equipment only professional water damage restoration professionals can provide. Facility managers, athletic directors, and administrators must realize that a water damage disaster involving a wooden gym floor is not a DIY project for staff, teachers, and students. Failure to appropriately address such a disaster could end up costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

When a water damage disaster occurs at a gym, fitness center, or rehab center involving a wooden court or activity space, every minute of delay accelerates the progress of the damage. A call to SERVPRO of Carrollton activates a team of technicians who arrive in less than an hour and are fully equipped to handle any size or type of disaster, including a water intrusion on a wooden gym floor.

What are the risks associated with unattended water damage?

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

How does water remediation work?

With the help of a company like SERVPRO that is certified to restore your home after water damage, all signs of the damage should be eliminated within a few weeks for even the most extensive problems. Many smaller restoration procedures take only a few days, but the result is the same: your home looks just as good as it was before the incident took place.

SERVPRO removes any water remaining in the house, drying your home out from walls to carpeting to furnishings, and then work to repair any structural or cosmetic damage the moisture may have caused to your home. We follow a tried and true water damage remediation process to ensure the best outcome possible.

What are the risks if homeowners forgo water remediation assistance?

Sometimes homeowners aren’t interested in spending money on water cleanup, assuming they can likely sop up the water and dry out the damage on their own. However, if you choose to go without the aid of a professional damage restoration service, the problems can compound and cost you much more in the long run. Excess water can seep into the foundation and structure of your home like walls and flooring, potentially requiring reconstruction efforts.

Your home could also develop a mold problem, as fungal spores grow quickly and easily in climate-controlled environments with plenty of moisture and humidity. That damage may not appear for days or longer after your water issue and go unnoticed until there’s a musty smell or mold appears. You might still end up making a call to us, but for a much more involved and costly set of issues. Such damage is not worth the risk, which is why it’s best to call in the professionals at SERVPRO.

How to Choose a Restoration Company That Remediates Primary Damage and Reduces Secondary Damage

2/9/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Carrollton provides a rapid response to a water damage disaster scene. Upon arrival, the mitigation process begins immediately. The team’s skill in mitigating primary and secondary water damage speeds up the recovery process while lowering overall costs.

Locally owned and operated, SERVPRO of Carrollton provides water damage restoration and cleaning services to Farmers Branch, TX, and the surrounding area. The team understands the stress and disruption that results from a sudden flood, water intrusion, or other accident. Crews arrive on the scene within an hour to begin the process of inspecting, assessing, and restoring the damaged property. This rapid response is crucial to prevent secondary damage from occurring. Water damage restoration specialists make a distinction between primary water damage and secondary water damage.

What is primary water damage?

Primary water damage is the damage caused at the time of the water intrusion. Examples of water intrusions include a burst supply line, a leaking or overflowing toilet, a ruptured pipe, roof damage from severe weather or a fallen tree, a flash flood, water from extinguishing a fire in a home or business, or an HVAC condensate pan leak.

By quickly removing the water and drying the affected areas, primary damage may be minimized in its severity or reversed if the water and moisture are immediately removed from the affected areas and items. More severe incidences of primary water damage may not be reversible, and extensive repair, reconstruction, or replacement may be the only solution. Examples that require more attention include short-circuited electronics and electrical devices, ruined household paper products and foodstuffs, collapsed ceilings, and stained or faded upholstery.

Keys to successfully mitigating primary water damage

A rapid response from the property damage restoration team is a key factor in successfully mitigating primary water damage. Hopefully, the property owner can identify the source of the water intrusion and reduce or stop the flow. If the leak is hidden, inaccessible, or too large for the homeowner to manage alone, the team from SERVPRO may stop the water flow by shutting off the water supply from the main shut off valve. This is a temporary solution and the water source will need to be identified and repaired prior to restoration of the affected area. The specialists then act to prevent any further water damage to personal belongings, furniture, and appliances. Almost immediately, the water removal and drying process will be initiated.

The rapid and thorough removal of water from water damaged areas is also crucial in mitigating primary water damage. Technicians utilize powerful equipment to rapidly extract the water, and industrial-strength fans and dehumidifiers remove the residual moisture from the air. To make the environment safe for humans and pets, technicians clean and sanitize the structure. Then, repairs, restoration, and reconstruction are implemented to return life to normal as soon as possible.

What is secondary water damage?

Damage from prolonged exposure to water and moisture after the initial water intrusion event is referred to as secondary water damage. It can begin almost immediately after the initial water intrusion. The main causes of secondary damage include delays in mitigating the initial intrusion and undetected or hidden water leaks. Failure to completely remove water and moisture can also result in secondary water damage. Qualified, reputable property damage restoration specialists are able to minimize or prevent secondary damage.

Examples of secondary water damage include:

  • buckling floors
  • swollen molding and baseboards
  • cracked plaster and warped drywall
  • wood rot
  • mold and mildew

Some instances of permanent secondary water damage include wood rot which must be removed and replaced. Carpeting contaminated with mold, mildew, or sewage must be removed and replaced. If warped flooring is dried quickly and returns to its normal shape, it may not need to be replaced.

Unfortunately, secondary water damage is often permanent, more time-consuming, and substantially more expensive to deal with than primary water damage. The mitigation of primary water damage is often less costly and less time-consuming than the repair, replacement, or reconstruction services required for secondary water damage.

An understanding of the differences between primary and secondary water damage helps homeowners, property managers, and businesses grasp the crucial importance of the following steps:

  1. Pre-qualification of a property damage restoration company before a disaster strikes
  2. Mitigation of the initial water intrusion at its source either before or soon after the property damage restoration crews arrive
  3. Notification of the pre-selected water damage restoration company
  4. Rapid response and arrival on scene by the damage restoration team
  5. Immediate initiation of the water removal, drying, and dehumidifying process
  6. Implementation of the water damage restoration project

The consequences of a DIY water damage restoration project

A DIY water damage restoration project often involves delayed water removal, drying, and dehumidification. Precious hours can be lost securing the necessary equipment. These delays can result in extensive secondary water damage. Efforts to save money in the short term may lead to damages that are substantially more costly and time-intensive to repair.

Why Choose SERVPRO of Carrollton for Cleaning and Restoration Services after a Sewage Backup

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Carrollton provides sewage cleanup services for homeowners in Bent Tree, TX, and surrounding communities.

SERVPRO of Carrollton, TX, is equipped and staffed to handle any size or type of property damage restoration project. Teams of highly trained, certified, and experienced technicians are available 24/7, 365 days a year. During the holidays, water, fire, and smoke damage disasters are more frequent. Extra holiday cooking, seasonal decorations, outdoor firepits, fireworks, and extended visits from family and friends increase the risk of a property damage disaster, including a sewage backup.

Sewage Backups: Causes and Prevention

Sewer lines are designed to accommodate the free flow of wastewater into the drainage system or septic tank. When sewer lines become obstructed, the thick, black water that accumulates is a potential health hazard. The contents of the clogged sewer lines are contaminated with bacteria, viruses, and toxins that can cause severe illness if humans or pets are exposed to this toxic water.

Knowledge of the causes of sewage backups can aid homeowners in preventing a hazardous situation in the home. Listed below are important tips on how to prevent and deal with sewage backups.

Causes of a Sewage Backup in the Basement

  1. Clogs

Common causes of clogs include hair, congealed grease, or other solid materials that end up in the drains. If all toilets and tubs in the house are experiencing slow movement or backflows, the main sewer line may be clogged.

  1. Tree roots

The root structure of trees can seriously damage a sewer line. Roots can crack or crush pipes. Once roots penetrate the sewer line, they can clog the pipe.

  1. Damaged sewer lines

Some older homes have cast iron or clay sewage lines which become brittle, crack, and collapse, resulting in a blockage, leak, or backup in the house.

  1. Heavy rainfall

Large amounts of rain from a thunderstorm, tropical storm, or hurricane can overwhelm a municipal sewer system. The resulting backflow can flood homes with raw sewage.

How to Avoid a Sewage Backup in the Home

  1. Do not pour cooking oil, grease, or fat down the sink or garbage disposal.
  2. Dispose of paper products properly. Paper towels, diapers, wipes, or feminine hygiene products can clog a sewer line. Paper products described as “flushable” still do not readily break down and should not be flushed into the sewer system. Dispose of these items in the trash.
  3. Replace aging cast iron and clay pipes with modern, stronger plastic pipes.
  4. Consider removing trees that are growing on or near the sewer lateral, the line from the home to the main sewer line connection at or near the road. Secure the services of a licensed, bonded, and insured tree surgeon who has experience dealing with trees and tree roots growing on or near a sewer line for more options.
  5. Install a backwater prevention valve. This device prevents sewage backflow into a residence or business and can be installed by a professional plumber.
  6. For homes with a sewage pump, regular inspection and proper maintenance are vital for keeping the unit functioning efficiently. A battery backup is essential in the event of a power outage.

What to Do Until Help Arrives

  1. Do not add to the problem. Avoid using any water or flushing the toilet. Consider shutting off the main water line into the home to ensure no accidental discharges occur.
  2. Avoid tracking contaminated sewage throughout the home. What may have started as a small sewage backup localized to the bathroom can balloon into a cleanup and restoration project that involves the entire structure.
  3. Wear protective gear such as rubber gloves, eyewear, and rubber boots before walking through sewage water.
  4. Notify the insurance company about the sewage backup. A standard homeowners policy may not cover the incident unless endorsements for sewers and drains have been added.
  5. If the homeowner suspects that the backup is due to a problem with the main sewer system, he or she should notify the municipal authority or sewer department if the home is connected to a public sewer. An experienced, professional plumber can diagnose the problem.
  6. Ventilate the area with fresh air by open windows or doors.

Hoarding often starts out as a collection of certain items or several piles of paper or garbage. Over time, especially after a traumatic event such as a death or divorce hoarding can escalate.

When dealing with a person with a hoarding disorder it is important to acknowledge that they may have an emotional attachment to the items in the home that you do not understand. Try to start with a simple clean up first such as clearing pathways and doorways.

Once you complete that then try moving on to one room at a time starting with the most frequently used rooms such as kitchen, bathroom and bedroom first.

If the hoarding problem has been going on for a number of years you may need to hire a professional to ease any family tension and make the process easier.

If you find yourself in that position please reach out to SERVPRO of Carrollton and Bent Tree for assistance.  Our staff knows how to help without creating friction between you and your loved ones.

Four Red Flags Homeowners Should Be Aware of When Choosing a Damage Restoration Company

10/20/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Carrollton is committed to providing customers with reliable emergency damage restoration services from the customer’s first contact with SERVPRO to the completion of the restoration project. Crews arrive within one hour of the call. After a thorough inspection and assessment, customers are presented with a written estimate that includes documentation and images. SERVPRO of Carrollton handles insurance claims while also working closely with the customer. The Carrollton SERVPRO is locally owned and operated. The business will be around for many years after the project is complete.

When homeowners need water damage restoration, fire and smoke restoration, or mold remediation, they want to hire a reputable professional restoration company they can trust. Since any disruption to life is stressful and inconvenient, the goal is to find a company as quickly as possible so that life can return to normal. A homeowner looking for property damage restoration at 2:00 am is usually in crisis mode.

Homeowners should not let an unscrupulous restoration company take advantage of their situation. Listed below are some danger signs homeowners should be aware of to avoid making the mistake of choosing an untrustworthy restoration company.

Red flag: The company offers instant estimates.

In the aftermath of a fire damage disaster or water damage disaster, the frantic homeowner is tempted to hire a company that can provide an estimate over the phone and can start work immediately. The homeowner should avoid any restoration company that claims to deliver an accurate estimate of the project without looking at the scene. A credible estimate requires a thorough inspection of the damage by a trained professional, an assessment of the extent of the damage, and an accurate calculation of expenses using industry-standard software such as Xactimate. An estimate that carries weight with an insurance provider must have sufficient documentation that includes photos. An estimate of this quality requires in-person damage inspection and assessment. Surprises will only serve to make a difficult situation worse.

Red flag: The company lacks or refuses to show paperwork.

Paper trails are essential. Proper documentation leads the homeowner to the most reputable, experienced, and trustworthy property damage restoration companies in the community. It is a good business practice to request the following documentation:

  • General contractor license if the company claims to be a general contractor
  • Verification of insurance and bonding
  • A written estimate along with the contract for the provision of services

This request for documentation is customary and not out of the ordinary for a reputable property damage restoration company. A franchised company may have a quality control and customer service process that requires the company to provide this documentation to every customer for every job. Make sure the licensing, insurance, and bonding are current. This request will filter out unqualified or unscrupulous competitors.

Red flag: The company requires upfront funding or offers a large cash discount.

A large-scale disaster such as a hurricane, tornado, or flood attracts home services companies, tree trimming companies, and property damage restoration companies near and far. The vast majority of these responders are great Americans who lay aside their comfort and convenience to serve their neighbors in need who have been displaced from their homes by a large-scale natural disaster or other crisis.

Red flag: The company lacks the proper certifications.

When hiring a damage restoration company, beware of service providers that do not have certifications to back up their work. Look for certifications from industry-standard certifying bodies, such as the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification.

Regrettably, scammers take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners caught in a crisis and in need of immediate assistance. First, the scammer will pressure the desperate homeowner to make a large down payment to cover materials. Second, the scammer will offer a sizable cash discount if the homeowner immediately hires the company to do the work. If the job is started, it is not finished. Even if the scammer finishes the job, the workmanship and materials will be inferior, and the company will conveniently disappear.

What Are the Benefits of Prequalifying a Restoration Company for a Rental Property?

9/6/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Carrollton explains why a landlord or a rental property owner should prequalify a damage restoration company, such as SERVPRO of Carrollton, for their rental home.

As property damage restoration specialists, the technicians at SERVPRO of Carrollton know and understand the many facets of owning and managing property, such as a home, business, or real estate portfolio of rental property. SERVPRO of Carrollton is dedicated to helping property owners recover from water damage, fire damage, mold damage, and other types of property damage disasters.

The Challenges of Owning Rental Property

Owning and managing rental property in Carrollton, TX, comes with certain issues and challenges.

  1. Late rent, little rent, or no rent

Cash flow issues threaten to turn a promising enterprise into a monthly nightmare. Irregular rent payments make it difficult for the property owner to make an adequate return on the investment.

  1. Unexpected expenses

Worn-out appliances, broken fixtures, and other maintenance issues are inevitable. A malfunctioning refrigerator, a shattered sliding door, or a catastrophic HVAC failure creates stress for both the landlord and the renter.

  1. Legal issues

A trip-and-fall incident at a rental property could result in expensive litigation costs for the property owner.

  1. Round-the-clock responsibilities

Small investors often enjoy working on their rental properties. However, dealing with issues at the property at inconvenient times is not as enjoyable.

  1. Property damage

A property damage disaster, such as water damage, mold infestation, fire damage, or smoke damage, has the potential to disrupt the life of both the renter and the property owner for weeks or months. A major fire and water damage incident could put renters in a hotel for days or weeks and disrupt cash flow from rent.

Evaluating the Benefit-Cost Ratio

Many individuals involved in business or investing are familiar with a benefit-cost ratio (BRC). According to Investopedia, “A benefit-cost ratio (BCR) is a ratio used in a cost-benefit analysis to summarize the overall relationship between the relative costs and benefits of a proposed project.” In the case of property damage restoration, it is helpful to weigh the benefits of prequalifying a damage restoration company before disaster strikes.

The Benefits of Prequalifying a Property Damage Restoration Company

Property owners can implement strategies to minimize the challenges of managing and maintaining rental property. One strategy is to prequalify a property damage restoration company to handle any catastrophe that might arise. Consider the following benefits of prequalifying a proven, reputable restoration company:

  1. Availability

The team at SERVPRO of Carrollton is available 24/7, 365 days a year, including Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. When the professionals are ready to respond to a disaster, the property owner does not have to.

  1. Ability to handle any type or size disaster

A reputable company can tackle a late-night sewage spill, burst pipe, ruptured supply line, or fire and smoke damage disaster. When SERVPRO professionals arrive on the scene, everyone knows help has arrived. Immediately, a trained technician inspects and evaluates the situation. A written estimate with documentation is prepared for approval by the owner or an agent of the owner. Meanwhile, if possible, any water intrusions are identified and mitigated. When pre-qualification is in place, staging for the cleanup and restoration process is quickly initiated. No time is wasted.

  1. Insurance claim management

SERVPRO of Carrollton handles the client’s insurance claims, including documentation. The company uses an industry-standard estimating app such as Xactimate, which is universally recognized by insurance companies.

  1. Training and experience

The SERVPRO team is trained, skilled, and experienced in helping property owners and renters deal with the stresses presented by a disaster that damages a home and destroys personal belongings.

By working with SERVPRO of Carrollton, property owners and property managers can successfully overcome some of the challenges associated with owning and renting out real estate. How the Team at SERVPRO of Carrollton Helps Homeowners Avoid Insurance Claim Mistakes

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Carrollton offers tips on how homeowners can avoid insurance claim mistakes.

The staff at SERVPRO of Carrollton, a Carrollton, TX, damage restoration company, knows how complicated and confusing home insurance can be. The task of correctly filing a claim on homeowners insurance is challenging and, at times, frustrating, especially in cases involving extensive property damage or a complex claim.

The likelihood of filing a claim increases as 2021 progresses. Summer tornado activity gears up. The eastern and Gulf Coast United States head into hurricane season. The western U.S., including Texas and the Dallas/Fort Worth area, including Carrollton, has already started its yearly battle against wildfires and whatever else comes along the way.

The industry experts at Forbes report that almost six percent or one out of fifteen insured homeowners filed a claim in 2018, according to data from the Insurance Information Institute. A staggering 98% of those claims stemmed from some form of property damage.

Informed and meticulous homeowners are capable of successfully navigating the insurance claims process. Listed below are some common mistakes homeowners should avoid making when filing an insurance claim after a property damage disaster.

Mistake #1: The homeowner did not take photo and video documentation of the damage.

The failure to thoroughly document property damage is the most common error homeowners make when filing an insurance claim. Homeowners encounter this pitfall when they fail to take pictures and videos of property damage as soon as the damage occurs or as soon as the damage is discovered.

Homeowners need to know that images and videos are vital when filing a claim. Periodically, a homeowner should create a walk-through video of the home. The video can be stored on the cloud, where it can be accessed at any time. This archive enables the homeowner to prove the extent of the damage to the house should property damage occur. This documentation can greatly aid the processing of the claim payout.

Mistake #2: The homeowner neglected to read the insurance policy.

Insurance policies are not easy to read. Although the technical language is complicated, the homeowner should still make an effort to understand the coverages in the policy. For instance, a common incorrect assumption is that flood insurance is the same as water backup coverage. Water backup coverage covers damage caused by a sewer drain or sump pump backup and will not cover damage from a flood.

Mistake #3: The homeowner did not have the right insurance to cover the property damage disaster.

A policy may only have actual cash value coverage for the contents of the home, which is not the same as replacement cost coverage. Damage from the wind and floodwaters of a hurricane is likely not covered by standard home insurance policies, especially if the home is located in a region prone to hurricane damage. A solid hurricane insurance plan might actually consist of three separate policies that ensure adequate coverage. Policy exclusions can financially devastate the homeowner who lives in an area susceptible to natural disasters.

Mistake #4: The homeowner did not make an inventory of the contents of the home.

This mistake will be especially painful in a situation where property damage is extensive. Stress and time impede memory. An exhaustive home inventory will make the claim process easier and faster.

Mistake #5: The homeowner failed to clearly communicate the damage in the insurance claim.

Many home insurance claim mistakes are the result of the homeowner’s failure to clearly describe the damage to the property. Poorly communicated claims information causes delays which can cause the entire claims process to grind to a halt.

Mistake #6: The homeowner did not file the claim promptly.

Negligent home maintenance can result in damages that are not covered by home insurance. For example, damage from a ruptured water pipe is covered. A claim for damage from a roof leak the homeowner failed to promptly repair may be denied because of the failure to take action to stop the leak. The failure to notice and report a potential claim can lead to claim denial.

Mistake #7: The homeowner discarded damaged items that would have been useful to the claim.

The temptation after a property damage disaster is to quickly clean up the mess and discard any debris. Regrettably, homeowners discard damaged belongings before the total damage is documented. In the cleaning process, receipts that would have supported a claim are sometimes destroyed. When filing a claim for a damaged item, keep the item until there is sufficient documentation of the damage. Failing to preserve a paper trail could be a very costly financial mistake.

Mistake #8: The homeowner attempted to navigate the claims process alone.

The insurance claims process is complex. A single error on the part of the homeowner could delay the process or reduce the final payout for damages. The homeowner who tries to navigate the process alone can expect delays, frustration, and an overall negative customer experience.

Trust the damage restoration experts at SERVPRO of Carrollton to handle the insurance claims process from beginning to end. The experienced staff will manage the claims process and work to resolve any issues that might arise so that the restoration process can progress smoothly and swiftly.

Why Customers Should Expect Damage Restoration Companies to Have Professional Industry Certifications

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Carrollton helps customers understand why industry certifications are vital for a property damage restoration company.

When a home or business owner is choosing a company to provide damage restoration services in or around Bent Tree, TX, he or she should make sure that the prospective damage restoration company has professional industry certifications. Professional certifications document the scope of instruction and training received by a technician. Certification also validates that technicians have successfully completed the required course instruction and have passed the relevant testing and evaluation of their competency.

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a nonprofit training and certification organization that serves the restoration industry around the world, including in the US, the UK, Australia, Japan, and more. IICRC provides certification programs and establishes standards to ensure best practices and performance for the inspection, cleaning, and restoration industries. The emphasis on best quality and competency protects the interests of consumers and professionals in these industries. IICRC certification instills a higher level of trust in the service provider and makes the customers confident that they will receive the best services.

Certification Requirements of the IICRC

Businesses seeking to qualify for IICRC-certified status must take several steps to prove they are both trustworthy and reliable. The goal is to ensure the best customer service while protecting the rights and interests of all participants or professionals.

These steps to certification include:

  • Proof of insurance
  • Proper documentation showing the educational and training requirements for certification have been met by all technicians
  • Documentation of follow-ups and ongoing training to maintain credentials
  • Deployment and maintenance of a proper customer complaint system (Formal, written complaint mitigation policies that seek to address and resolve the issue as soon as possible are a mandatory component of this system. Proper documentation of follow-up and outcomes is also required.)
  • Adherence to the IICRC Code of Ethics, which are a collaborative effort between the IICRC and the community of professionals

Direct Benefits of IICRC Certification

An IICRC certification validates a professional reputation for a property damage restoration business. The continuing education requirements help a business maintain a high level of competency and stay competitive in the industry. It also provides the support essential for sustained growth.

  1. Customers can rest assured that anyone working on their home or property has the appropriate knowledge and skills to do the work correctly and thoroughly.
  2. Customers can be confident that technicians are aware of and are following the necessary safety precautions for workers, residents, and building occupants.
  3. IICRC certification ensures a uniform and up-to-date knowledge base, as well as compliance with safety standards and precautions. Maintaining job site quality and safety standards prevents costly restoration mistakes, lost-time accidents, and a damaged reputation.
  4. By maintaining the consistently high standards and expectations of IICRC-certification, a property damage restoration company builds credibility and earns respect in the industry.
  5. Inclusion in the IICRC database of certified professionals increases visibility, enhances accessibility, and reinforces professional legitimacy in the eyes of both customers and competitors.
  6. The broader brand relationships and networking opportunities that grow out of participation in IICRC certification and recognition help the restoration business provide a more comprehensive range of benefits and services to clients.

Benefits to Consumers

The IICRC provides a number of benefits to consumers as well.

  1. Rigid standards developed by the industry’s top professionals adapt when needed with advancements in information and technology.

Customers know they can trust processes driven by IICRC-certified professionals.

  1. Standardized training and credentialing instill confidence in the professionals and the quality of their job performance.

Customers can have confidence that all team members have the knowledge and skills to perform the restoration process safely and effectively.

  1. The requirement for continuing training and instruction to maintain professional credentials ensure uniform quality and safety.

Having to refresh essential knowledge and skills to maintain certifications and gain employment prevents the dangerous practice that permits nearly anyone to engage in property damage restoration, even without updated training. The restoration and cleaning industries are constantly advancing and improving. Continuous training keeps professionals on the cutting edge of innovations in technology, techniques, and safety.

  1. IICRC-certified businesses must have insurance coverage.

Insurance is a necessary part of business operations. If something goes awry on the job, insurance guarantees that the team, the customer, and the property are properly protected.

  1. An IICRC-certified damage restoration company adheres to a strict code of ethics and has a system with policies, procedures, and documentation requirements to handle and resolve complaints.

Customers can be assured that if there is a problem, it will be remedied in a timely and professional manner. All IICRC-certified businesses must implement an effective and trustworthy protocol to process and resolve any customer complaints.

Usually, we start by thoroughly removing water from the property, then drying using proper drying methods.

Mold Remediation

Indoor air quality is becoming increasingly prominent in the restoration service industry. Often, homeowners are surprised by quite how many toxins can exist in a home environment. The issue is especially pertinent in homeowners that have mold damage.

Molds breed by releasing microscopic spores into the surrounding atmosphere. These spores can cause unpleasant odors as well as ingestion when inhaling indoor air. SERVPRO takes decisive action during mold remediation to ensure the spread is limited and your air-quality restored.

Setting up containment is an essential part of the restoration. Usually, an area of your Seattle home that shows evidence of mold growth needs quarantining. The removal of mold colonies or demolition of infested materials increases airborne spores.

SERVPRO applies negative air pressure when performing controlled demolitions to ensure that the spread of spores is under control. Also, we may use physical barriers such as polyurethane sheeting to prevent microscopic spores from escaping.

Airborne particles are frequently invisible to the naked eye. This invisibility makes it challenging for a homeowner to assess or act against unwanted indoor air particles. Using high-efficiency particulate air-filters (HEPA), SERVPRO technicians can remove particles from the air that are as small as 0.3 microns. Air scrubbing equipment combined with deodorizing methods saves time on the turnaround of your restoration service.

Storm Damage Restoration

Storms can expose your home to outdoor elements as well as pathogens that may enter in floodwaters. Extraction is the most effective method of controlling storm damage in your Seattle home. However, to be truly useful, you need to combine rapid extraction with careful cleaning and drying.

At SERVPRO, we often find homeowners suffering from microbial growth or mold issues traced back to initial flooding several weeks or months before.

When water is extracted and dried, it can leave behind microbes or stain on the flooring materials of your home. We use rotary floor machines to both loosen soiling from hard surfaces and apply pre-conditioning agents to soft ones like carpets. Rotary machines not only help to dislodge severe soiling but can help to buffer floors and leave them in a preloss condition.

Fire Damage Restoration

If your heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system are on, it can cause extensive fire damage to your home during a storm event.  Air entering the supply side can overload filters causing hot smokes to travel through ventilation shafts. Return side outlets can then end up spewing soots, odor, and ash into unaffected regions of the house. SERVPRO restoration services incorporate a comprehensive game plan for HVAC inspection, cleaning, and replacement of ventilation ducts.

Hot smokes are attracted to cooler surfaces, which include the metal insides of a ventilation shaft. These can deposit thick soiling onto the inner sides of an HVAC system, which can be challenging and technical to clean. SERVPRO restoration services here in Carrollton, TX can remove both return and supply-side air ducts to carry out in-depth inspections. Using air whips, we can dislodge loose soiling, which can then vacuum out using negative air pressure machines. Cleaning of the interior closest to the wall- where soiling builds up- can be cleaned using water and oil-based solvents.

Once your HVAC is clean, we can begin to perform repairs. Cavities opened with a circular drill for negative air pressure machine access can be resealed using aluminum plating. We can replace ducts in every room inexpensively. Return side ventilation filters need replacing to ensure that odor remains under control, and your home brought to a preloss condition.

Home emergencies are unexpected and, at times, seem unfair. Contact us  at 972-446-0383 for assistance with mold, storm, fire, or water-related incidents.

faster to any size disaster - image of green SERVPRO vehicle on road #Heretohelp

When disaster strikes your home or business, time becomes an especially precious commodity. When it is your home or livelihood on the line, you don’t have the benefit of waiting for help—you need it right away.

We know that a fast response is crucial, which is why responding faster to any size disaster is more than just a slogan to us.

Why a Fast Response Matters-

When it’s your belongings or business on the line, time is not a luxury you have regarding disaster cleanup. This is especially true when water damage has come into play, which can be through various means such as flooding, appliance and/or plumbing failures, storm damage and fire damage, as water is used to put out the fires.

It only takes mere minutes for water to spread throughout your property, where it will saturate everything in its path. The walls, the floors, upholstery and your belongings are fast casualties of water.

The effects of water damage within the first 24 hours include:

  • Drywall beginning to swell and break down
  • Metal surfaces beginning to tarnish
  • Furniture beginning to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper items spreading and staining
  • The beginning of a musty odor

The damage continues to worsen as time goes on. Between 48 hours to a week later, you could begin to see:

  • The growth and spreading of mold and mildew
  • Swelling and warping of doors, windows and studs
  • Metal beginning to rust and corrode
  • Paint beginning to blister
  • Wood flooring swelling and warping
  • The possibilities of serious biohazard contamination

Water damage that is left unchecked for over a week can lead to a dramatically increased restoration time and costs and can also impact structural safety.

How We Can Help-

We can provide an immediate response to any size disaster, which can help minimize the damage and help keep the cleaning and restoration costs manageable.

Our trained cleanup and restoration specialists can be dispatched to your property or business at any time, no matter what day or time it is.

Being a locally owned and operated franchise helps us be close by and ready to respond whenever the call comes in. Racks of Drying Equipment "Like it Never Even Happened!"

At SERVPRO of Carrollton,  we strive to provide our customers the best service using our latest, up-to-date equipment and technology. We understand the stress that comes with experiencing a water or fire damage and our goal is to alleviate that stress as quickly as possible. We always follow the practices and standards set by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).

When we report to a water damage at a home or business, the first step is to determine the extent of the damage, and the areas affected. Our advanced moisture meters allow us to detect water that cannot be seen behind the walls or under your flooring, and exactly how saturated it is. We use our infrared cameras for areas that are harder to detect with the meters.

Once we determine the affected areas, we will set up drying equipment. Our industrial dehumidifiers and high-speed air movers are typically used in a residential or small water loss. The dehumidifiers help remove the moisture from walls, ceilings, and floors. The air movers increase air circulation, improving the overall drying time by helping to evaporate moisture in the air quickly. For larger commercial water damages, we use our high-grade desiccants to complete the drying process more efficiently.

Water and fire damages have the potential to cause powerful odors. We use air scrubbers and deodorization agents to remove these odors and help control air quality. Our air scrubbers remove chemicals, contaminants and gasses from the air through a filtration process. Our deodorization agents control the odors helping to eliminate them from the air all together.

If you have a water or fire damage, call us at 972-446-0383.

With our advanced equipment & expertise, we promise to make the damage feel “Like it never even happened.”

3 Ways To Prevent Water Damage During Construction

Preventing Water Damage During Construction

Constructing a new area or making renovations can benefit your business in Carrollton, TX in many ways. However, avoiding a water pipe repair or a leaking appliance can result in water damage during construction. There are several ways in which you can prevent water damage from occurring during construction.

1. Protect Important Areas and Items

In order to ensure that water doesn’t cause major damage to your business, it can sometimes be helpful to make sure certain areas in your business and items in your business are protected. For example, it’s often wise to make sure any electrical systems are turned off or moved away from the construction to prevent them from coming in contact with water. Additionally, using waterproof containers to store important documents can give you peace of mind.

2. Monitor Water Use Before and During Construction

If you know the average amount of water your business uses before construction, keeping track of the amount of water being used during construction will be easier. If you notice a sudden spike in your water usage, you can search for the potential causes of the jump in water usage. Additionally, if you do notice an increase in your water use prior to construction, it’s often best not to put off the water pipe repair or other issue, and instead fix the problem before construction begins.

3. Conduct Frequent Inspections

Throughout construction, it can be helpful to inspect your building to ensure there are no hidden issues. It can be particularly useful to inspect your appliances and pipes if they are near the area that is under construction, as these items are more likely to become damaged. By doing these inspections, you are more likely to notice a leaky or broken pipe or appliance, and you may be able to prevent your building from becoming flooded.

Monitoring your water usage and making a water pipe repair or fixing other issues before construction, keeping your building and documents safe and conducting frequent inspections can help you prevent water damage. Consider contacting water damage restoration professionals if your business has already sustained damage.

How To Resolve a Mold Issue at Your Business

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Mold present behind wall in Carrollton,TX

Discovering you have a mold problem at your Carrollton, TX, business can be stressful. Black mold and other fungi grow and spread for many reasons but are usually the result of a flood, pipe leak or other source of moisture. Cleanup efforts can be a challenge; however, knowing which steps to take may help you save time and get your business back on track.

Contain the Area

Performing mold remediation is an important step once you discover it inside your building. Even if the growth is already significant, you can stop the spread of mold spores by taking several simple actions before help arrives:

  • Turn off the HVAC system
  • Open windows in the affected area
  • Use fans to lower the humidity where mold is present

Have your employees and customers steer clear of contaminated rooms and place barriers and warning signs to prevent anyone from entering.

Call in Mold Professionals

Black mold and other types of fast-growing fungi are usually difficult to destroy, so calling in a mold damage and restoration service can be an effective step in your mold cleanup efforts. Professional technicians can target the source of the growth, gauge how serious the infestation is, and offer you different options for restoration based on your budget and needs.

Opt for Tear Out and Flood Cut Services

If the mold inside your business was caused by severe flooding, it is wise to ask your restoration technicians about tear out and flood cut services, especially if affected rooms contain drywall. This material can absorb water and allow mold to grow inside walls, where it often causes insulation and wood to rot. Cutting into the drywall to find and remove damaged building materials can prevent future mold growth and the costly repairs that might come with it.

Flooding and other moisture issues can cause black mold to grow inside your Carrollton, TX, business as soon as 24 hours after the event. Knowing which steps to take for remediation could mean the difference between resolving the problem efficiently and a prolonged closure that might affect the future of your business.

Smoke Damage From a Fire Can Be Very Destructive

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

Five Commonly Overlooked Areas to Keep In Mind As You Recover From a Fire

When you think of a fire blazing through your business in Carrollton, TX, you most likely picture charred wood and flames leaping from surface to surface, gobbling up precious paperwork. But take a moment to consider another cause of damage — smoke. The odor of smoke from a fire will not simply go away on its own; you must employ smoke cleaning techniques to prevent health issues and other problems.

  1. Not all smoke is created equal. Certain items produce toxic substances when they burn and leave a harmful, or even greasy, residue on surfaces in addition to the smoke odor. Handling these items can make you sick.

  2. Upholstery and draperies can be ruined by smoke damage. The odor goes deep into foam cushions and can even stain the fabrics. Just airing them out in the fresh air and sunshine is not nearly adequate.

  3. Recessed lighting, frequently found in business locations, can harbor smoke residue, which, when the lights heat up, can release a strong odor for years if not cleaned.

  4. HVAC ducts that carry air conditioning and heat into your office spaces can also carry allergens and toxins into the lungs of your employees or clients, causing health issues. Ductwork will require professional inspection and smoke cleaning services, which may involve using ozone machines or air filtration devices.

  5. Acoustic ceiling tiles can become discolored and stained and release the smoke odor into the air indefinitely if not cleaned or replaced.

As you can see, in addition to the burned areas of your business, and any water damage caused by the hundreds of gallons of water used to put out the fire, smoke can be incredibly invasive, sneaking into every crevice and settling there, requiring thermal foggers to reach all those hiding places. If you are located in Carrollton, TX, don't worry; your nearby smoke cleaning specialists can offer great peace of mind as they thoroughly eradicate smoke damage and odor.

3 Important Facts About Flood Damage Cleanup

11/13/2018 (Permalink)

Major residential storm damage in Carrollton, TX

Flood Damage Cleanup

When heavy flooding occurs in Carrollton, TX, it can cause widespread damage throughout your home. From soaked drywall to standing water that can warp or rot wooden or carpeted flooring, flood waters can wreak havoc on every level of your house. However, before you begin the cleanup process, it is important that you understand the difference between storm floods and those that stem from plumbing problems, as the remediation and restoration for each can differ.

1. Storm Floods Are Usually Widespread

When violent storms cause flooding, the water can be difficult to control or divert. Even streams or creeks that spill over during heavy rain are capable of creating significant flood waters that can pour into your home. When this happens, almost any room can be affected, and unlike small plumbing floods, the water cannot be confined to one area.

2. Flood Water Is Contaminated

Flood damage cleanup presents a unique set of challenges because of the condition of the water. Overflowing sewers, animal waste and pesticides from flooded lawns can severely contaminate flood water and make it dangerous to handle. Experienced technicians that work at a storm cleanup and remediation service usually call this Category 3, or black water, as it did not come from a sterile source, such as a broken kitchen pipe or water line, both of which are generally considered Category 1.

3. Mold Growth Can Happen Quickly

Standing water that stems from heavy floods can increase the humidity in your home and accelerate mold growth on walls, ceilings and furniture. Having the rooms drained as soon as possible can decrease this type of water damage. However, if mold develops afterward, it is wise to ask your cleanup technicians to perform a flood cut in each room to ensure no fungi has spread into the interior walls.

Flooding can cause significant damage when it invades your Carrollton, TX, home. Understanding the difference between outdoor floods and those that begin indoors will likely make the cleanup process less stressful.

When Do I Need Commercial Flood Insurance?

6/15/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial insurance covers one type of water damage, while flood insurance covers an entirely different type of water damage.

You may think you don’t need commercial flood insurance, especially if you live in a particularly dry or elevated area of Carrollton, TX. Yet you’d be surprised by the situations in which flood damage can strike, and leave you high and dry on coverage for damages. So what’s the deal with commercial insurance?

What Flood Insurance Covers

You may already have a commercial property insurance policy, but this only covers water damage related to burst pipes or other such incidents. When floods happen from storms, melting snow, hurricanes, or other natural disasters, you need a separate flood policy to cover it. This policy will cover floodwater damage to:

• Structural damage to walls, floors, and ceilings
• Fixtures
• Furniture
• Inventory
• Business property

If a flood affects your property and these items or structures are damaged, then your commercial flood policy will generally cover the cost of replacing them with comparable items up to a certain point. An insurance adjuster will make necessary determinations regarding a claim, and the amount that may be awarded in compensation.

What Flood Insurance Doesn’t Cover.

Flood insurance doesn’t cover everything, though. Your policy usually won’t cover things such as:

• Damaged currency
• Mold and mildew damage, particularly if preventable
• Economic losses due to business interruption
• Cost of temporary premises or housing
• Vehicle damage
• External property, furnishings, and décor outside the commercial building

Some of these items will be covered under a standard insurance policy for commercial properties.

So I Need Both Flood and Commercial Insurance?

Yes. Commercial insurance covers one type of water damage, while flood insurance covers an entirely different type of water damage. To be safe, especially if you live in an area prone to flooding, high levels of snow melt, or other natural disasters, you should attain both types of insurance. Many insurance companies will provide you with a quote on a package to combine the two, or discuss your options for purchasing each policy separately.
