How To Prepare Your Home For A Major Storm

There are several different measures you can take to prepare your home for a major storm, and we’ve highlighted 3 of the main ones that you can get started with today.

1) Storm-proof your windows and doors.

You’ve probably heard it before but it may still be a foreign term—storm-proofing. What is that again? Storm-proofing normally consists of switching out your typical doors and windows with storm-durable doors and windows that are made of heavier materials that can withstand high winds and precipitation. This will help your doors and windows withstand weather conditions of all kinds, and it may reduce the likelihood of your windows and doors flying off their hinges or shattering if a tornado passes by.

2) Trim your trees and clear anything big and bulky away from your home

Low-lying tree branches or dead limbs are perfect ammunition for gusty winds that accompany most major storms in the area. Make sure you clear your landscape of dead limbs, low-lying tree branches parallel to your windows, and other big and bulky items like statues, etc. that could be whipped up in the turbulent wind and end up damaging your home.

3) Give your shingles and siding a once-over.

Missing and broken shingles and siding make your home more susceptible to the elements and winds that come with major storms, and you should always give your home a once-over before storm season so you can get any broken or missing ones replaced as needed. Any loose or damaged shingles will likely tear and rip away when a storm comes through, and the same can be said of siding. Imagine what a tornado might do if a simple storm could blow them out of sight.

While being prepared for major storms is a great first step toward preventing storm damage, sometimes you can’t prevent it from happening regardless of maintenance action items you tackle beforehand. If you find yourself dealing with any damage from a storm that passes through, whether it be fire, water, mold, or a tree limb through your roof, give SERVPRO of Carrollton and Bent Tree a call at 972-446-0383.
